Behind the Lathe: The Stories My Pens Tell

There’s something deeply satisfying about taking a raw blank—be it shimmering acrylic, a block of wood, or a slice of carbon fibre—and slowly revealing the pen hidden inside it. Each pen I make at The Pen Guy has a story. Some are experiments that went right. Others are inspired by a memory, a conversation, or a customer’s passing comment. But all of them are made by hand, in my workshop, with care, patience, and a bit of stubbornness.
The Art of Pen Making
Pen making is more than just a craft. It's an art form that requires skill and attention to detail. The process involves selecting the right materials, shaping them, and adding intricate designs. This blend of creativity and technical skill produces unique writing instruments. Each piece reflects the personality and passion that have been poured into it.
From Mistake to Masterpiece
Take the purple and bronze Galant pen, for example. That started as an afterthought—leftover resin from another project. I wasn’t expecting much, but as the swirl of violet, copper, and gold set in the mould, I could see something regal coming to life. It’s now one of my favourites, proving that sometimes the best results happen when you’re just having fun.
Engineering Meets Elegance
Then there’s the Velocity pen, featuring a carbon fibre body and chrome trim. That one was a nod to the sleek design of performance cars. Precision-cut and polished to a mirror finish—it’s got the look and feel of something built for speed. But it still writes like butter.
Built Like a Hammer (Literally)
And of course, there’s The Fixer—a novelty pen for those who love tools more than titles. With its hammer-shaped clip and hand-dented African Blackwood body, it’s part pen, part personality piece. It’s become a favourite gift for dads, DIYers, and anyone who’s ever shouted “pass me the 10mm” in frustration.
The Journey of Each Pen
Every pen goes through a unique journey, from raw material to finished product. I carefully select my materials, ensuring they meet my high standards for quality and durability. Whether it's a shimmering acrylic, a block of wood, or a slice of carbon fibre, each material is chosen for its unique characteristics and ability to create a beautiful, long-lasting pen. Once I have the chosen blank, the real fun begins. I shape and polish it, watching as it transforms into something special. Each turn on the lathe reveals more about what that piece is capable of becoming.
Why Handmade Matters
In a world where everything is mass-produced and identical, I think it’s nice to own something one-of-a-kind. When you buy one of my pens, you're not just getting a writing tool—you’re getting a slice of craftsmanship, a bit of story, and something that was made to last. Handmade pens are not just practical writing tools; they are also pieces of art that add a personal and meaningful touch to your writing experience. They are designed and crafted with care and attention to detail, ensuring that they not only look beautiful but also perform well over time.
The Importance of Choosing Quality
Quality matters when it comes to pens. A well-made pen enhances your writing experience. It enables you to express yourself more effectively and enjoy the process. A good pen can make the mundane act of writing feel more special. Each of my pens is a testament to quality craftsmanship, setting them apart from their mass-produced counterparts.
Customise Your Experience
If you're looking for a pen that feels like yours, not one of thousands, you’re in the right place. At The Pen Guy, you can customise many aspects of your pen, from the material and colour to the design and size, to suit your style and preferences.
