Why Choose The Pen Guy?
Handmade pens with a story
Hi, I'm Guy Harvey, the maker behind The Pen Guy, a small independent handmade pen business based in Worcestershire, UK.
I create unique handmade fountain pens, rollerball pens and ballpoint pens, each individually crafted in my workshop. I work with materials including beautiful natural woods, acrylics, resins and other unusual materials to create writing instruments that are designed to be distinctive, practical and enjoyable to use.
The Pen Guy began with a love of woodturning.
I started by making bowls, rolling pins, candlesticks and other wooden creations for the people around me, co-workers, friends and family. Eventually, my home became rather full of them! My family suggested I try a pen-making course, and that turned out to be a life-changing experience.
From the moment I made my first pen, I was hooked.
Pens quickly became my passion, and The Pen Guy was born.
What makes The Pen Guy different?
Every pen is made by me.
I don't mass-produce pens or simply put together an off-the-shelf writing instrument. I select the materials, shape and finish the pen, assemble the components and pay attention to the small details that turn a collection of materials into a finished writing instrument.
Many of my pens are completely one-of-a-kind. Natural wood has its own grain and character, while handmade acrylics and resins can produce patterns that cannot be precisely repeated. I enjoy combining materials, colours, finishes and pen styles to create genuinely individual designs.
That's what I love about handmade pen making: the possibilities are almost endless.
Handmade in Worcestershire
The Pen Guy is proudly based in Worcestershire, England, where I make my pens in a workshop specially designed to accommodate my wheelchair.
My mobility has never stopped me from making things.
In fact, designing my workshop around the way I work has become part of the journey. It is a practical, creative space where I can concentrate on what matters: making beautiful, functional pens.
Every pen that leaves the workshop has passed through my hands.
Fountain pens, rollerballs and ballpoints
I make several different types of writing instruments, including:
-
Handmade fountain pens for people who enjoy the traditional writing experience
-
Handmade rollerball pens for a smooth, effortless writing experience
-
Handmade ballpoint pens for everyday practicality
-
Bespoke and personalised pens designed around a person, occasion or story
Whether you're looking for a pen for yourself, a special gift, a retirement present, an anniversary or a unique corporate or personal commission, I can work with you to create something personal.
Bespoke pens made for you
Some of my favourite projects are the pens that start with an idea rather than a finished design.
You might have a favourite colour, a particular type of wood, a connection to a hobby, a career, a sports team, a special place or simply an idea that you'd like to see turned into a pen.
That's where bespoke pen making comes in.
I can help you choose the pen style, materials, colours and finish and then turn those ideas into a unique writing instrument made specifically for you.
No two bespoke pens need to be the same.
Why buy a handmade pen?
A mass-produced pen can be an excellent writing instrument.
But a handmade pen is different.
You're buying something that has been designed, shaped, finished and assembled by an individual maker rather than produced thousands at a time in a factory.
The material itself can make every pen different. A piece of wood has its own grain. A handmade acrylic blank can have its own pattern. Even two pens made from the same material will rarely be identical.
That means the pen you own isn't simply a product.
It has its own character and story.
Pens made to be used.
Although I love the craftsmanship that goes into making each pen, these aren't simply ornaments.
I make pens to be written with.
Balance, weight, grip, finish and the overall feel of the pen matter just as much as how it looks. Whether it's an everyday ballpoint, a smooth rollerball or a fountain pen for someone who loves writing with ink, I want the finished pen to be something you enjoy picking up and using.
A little more than just pen making
Some of my pens have also been donated to charities, auctions and fundraising events, allowing something I've created in my workshop to contribute to causes that matter.
I also particularly enjoy creating commissions where the finished pen has a personal meaning for its owner.
Those are often the projects that make pen-making especially rewarding.
Looking for something unique?
Perhaps you're looking for:
A handmade fountain pen.
A unique British-made pen.
A bespoke pen made specifically for someone.
A special gift that isn't something they'll find in every shop.
If so, I'd love to help.
You can browse my current collection of handmade pens or get in touch to discuss creating something completely your own.
Let's create something special.
If you'd like a bespoke pen, tell me:
-
What's your favourite colour?
-
Do you prefer a fountain pen, rollerball or ballpoint?
-
Do you prefer a twist mechanism or capped pen?
-
Would you like wood, acrylic/resin, or a combination?
-
What size and shape feels comfortable in your hand?
-
And what sort of budget would you like to work within?
I'll take those ideas, and we'll see where they lead.
Warm regards,
Guy
