Maker’s Story
Some materials demand respect — Paua Abalone is one of them.
This blank was created by Jon David Jones of Blankwerks in Tennessee, a craftsman renowned within the pen-making community for his meticulous Paua Abalone work. Each piece of shell is carefully cut into staves, arranged precisely, and cast in clear resin—a painstaking process that transforms fragile natural shell into something durable and usable.
 
When I first saw this blank, the colours were almost unreal — like a Southern sunset caught in oil on water. I knew immediately that it had to be elegant rather than ornate. The classic rollerball design was the perfect canvas.
 
Turning Paua is always slightly nerve-wracking. You work slowly, deliberately, knowing there’s no replacing that natural iridescence. With each pass and polish, the colours deepened — magenta blooming into violet, flashes of blue appearing from nowhere.
 
There’s a moment when you lift it into the light, and it suddenly comes alive.
 
That’s when you know it’s ready.
