Absolutely. This one deserves a name with a bit of drama — the Ziricote has that extraordinary combination of deep chocolate-brown, almost black grain, and flashes of golden warmth. The ornate silver-tone hardware really suits it.

Ziricote Nocturne

A name that suggests something dark, sophisticated and slightly mysterious, without simply describing the wood.

Ziricote Nocturne

What makes this pen special?

Some pieces of wood are beautiful. Others seem to have a personality of their own.

Ziricote Nocturne is made from genuine Ziricote, a highly figured hardwood renowned for its dramatic grain and rich, naturally contrasting colours. Deep chocolate and near-black streaks run through the wood, broken by beautiful golden-brown highlights that seem to move as the pen catches the light.

I have deliberately allowed the natural character of the Ziricote to take centre stage. Rather than trying to make the grain uniform, I wanted to preserve the swirls, streaks and contrasts that make this particular piece completely individual.

Finished to a deep, glossy shine and paired with beautifully detailed chrome-tone hardware, the result is a pen that feels both luxurious and distinctive.

And, as with every pen I make, there is only one exactly like this one.

Who is this pen for?

The Ziricote Nocturne is for someone who appreciates natural materials, craftsmanship and things that aren't mass-produced.

It would make a superb everyday writing instrument, a memorable gift for someone special, or simply something rather lovely to keep on your desk and pretend you're going to write something important with.

It would also make a particularly striking choice for someone who loves darker, sophisticated colours but still wants the warmth and individuality of real wood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the exact pen I will receive?

Yes. This is a one-of-a-kind handmade pen, so the pen pictured is the actual pen you will receive. The Ziricote grain cannot be replicated, meaning no two pens will ever look exactly the same.

Is Ziricote a good wood for a pen?

Absolutely. Ziricote is prized for its strength, stability and spectacular figuring. Its naturally dark colouring and contrasting grain make it particularly well suited to creating distinctive luxury writing instruments.

Will the wood change over time?

Like all natural wood, Ziricote can subtly develop with age and exposure to light. That's part of the charm of owning a genuine wooden pen — it isn't manufactured to look identical forever; it develops its own character.

Is this really handmade?

Yes. I start with the raw material and do the turning, shaping, sanding and finishing myself. There is a fair amount of work involved in turning a piece of wood into something this shiny. Fortunately, I quite enjoy it.

Can the pen be refilled?

Yes. The pen is designed to be used again and again rather than thrown away when the ink runs out. Replacement refills or ink cartridges/converters can be used according to the writing configuration supplied.

Why does the grain look different in different photographs?

Because it's real wood! Ziricote has considerable variation in colour and figuring, and the grain can appear lighter, darker or more golden depending on the angle of the light. That is one of the things that makes this pen so special.

My favourite line for the product page would be:

“Dark, dramatic and quietly extravagant — Ziricote Nocturne lets the wood do the showing off.”
