What makes this pen special?

Some pens are made to blend in. The Emperor was never going to be one of them.

With its dramatic red, white and blue swirls, rich gold-tone fittings and intricately decorated clip, this Emperor fountain pen has all the presence its name suggests. The marbled pattern twists and flows across the body and cap, creating a striking combination of colour, movement and individuality. The bold red and white centre band adds another distinctive touch, bringing the colours together beautifully.

But what really makes this pen special isn't simply how it looks. It's the effort that went into getting it right.

I reworked the pen body three times before I was happy with it. Each time, I felt something was still missing. I wanted the colours, the marbled swirls and the contrasting centre band to work together, rather than compete for attention. The finished pen needed to feel like a complete design, with every element complementing the others.

So I kept going until everything came together.

The result is a genuinely individual fountain pen, with bold colours, elegant gold-tone detailing and a body that has received the attention it deserved. It is unique, and there will never be another pen with precisely the same combination of colours, pattern and finishing touches.

This is handmade pen-making at its best: not stopping when something is merely good enough, but carrying on until it feels right.

Who is this pen for?

The Emperor is for someone who appreciates a fountain pen with real character.

Perhaps you're a collector looking for something different from the familiar black and gold classics. Perhaps you enjoy bold colours, intricate patterns and objects that make people stop and take a second look. Or perhaps you're simply someone who believes that the things we use every day should bring us a little pleasure.

It would make a striking addition to a fountain pen collection, a memorable gift for a writer or pen enthusiast, or a special pen for signing important documents, recording ideas or putting thoughts on paper.

This isn't a shy, understated pen. It's for someone who likes a little personality with their penmanship.

And if you appreciate the craftsmanship behind a handmade object, there's an extra story here: three attempts to get the body looking right, because I wasn't prepared to settle for something I wasn't completely happy with.

Is this suitable as a gift?

Absolutely. The Emperor makes a memorable gift for a fountain pen enthusiast, collector, writer or anyone who appreciates distinctive craftsmanship.

Its bold colours and gold-tone detailing give it a luxurious, celebratory feel, making it particularly suitable for a milestone birthday, retirement, anniversary, graduation or other special occasion.

Because this is a one-off pen, you're giving someone something genuinely individual rather than another item from a production line.

Maker's Story

I'm a firm believer that a handmade pen should be more than a collection of components assembled to a set of instructions. It should have character, and every detail should earn its place.

The Emperor certainly tested that belief.

I loved the red, white and blue swirls, and the gold-tone fittings gave the pen exactly the presence I wanted. But something about the body wasn't quite right. The colours needed to complement one another, and the overall design had to work as a whole.

So I reworked it.

Then I did it again.

And then, because apparently I'm incapable of leaving well enough alone, I had another go.

Each time, I thought I was getting closer, but I still wasn't completely satisfied. I wanted the finished pen to have the right balance of colour and pattern, with those wonderful swirls taking centre stage without the other details getting lost.

There comes a point in making something when you have to decide whether to accept what you've got or keep working until it matches the picture in your head. I chose the latter.

Eventually, everything came together. The colours complemented one another, the gold-tone fittings finished the design beautifully, and the whole pen finally felt right.

Was it more work than I'd originally planned? Yes. Did I probably spend longer on it than a sensible person would? Almost certainly.

But I make pens because I enjoy turning an idea into something special. And when I look at a pen and know something isn't quite right, I'm not very good at leaving it alone.

The Emperor is the result: bold, distinctive and completely its own. Three attempts to get the body looking right, and finally, a pen I'm genuinely happy with.

Which is just as well. I think it was beginning to wonder whether it would ever be allowed out of the workshop.
