Maker's Story

When I came across this design, I thought it had something rather special about it.

I'm used to working with all sorts of materials in my Worcestershire workshop, from natural woods with their own remarkable grain to colourful resins that can do almost anything. But this pen has something extra: a message that needs no explanation.

The red and amber colours give it warmth, the flashes of green and yellow add movement, and the bronze-tone fittings lend it a traditional character. Then there's the lettering itself: “I Love You”, right there in the body of the pen.

It's a lovely idea because it brings together two things I enjoy about making pens. The first is creating something individual that looks good in its own right. The second is making something that might mean a little more to the person who eventually owns it.

I can make a pen, polish it until it shines and make sure the details come together. But I can't decide who it will be given to, or what occasion it will celebrate. That's the part the buyer gets to make their own.

Perhaps it'll be an anniversary present. Perhaps it'll mark a special birthday. Or perhaps someone will buy it on an ordinary Tuesday because they want to remind their partner that they're loved.

Personally, I think the ordinary Tuesday option is rather lovely.
