Amboyna burr always carries character — but this piece carried atmosphere.
Before it ever touched the lathe, I noticed the darker tones running through the golden burl. They weren’t harsh or heavy — more like smoke drifting through warm light. That contrast made it clear this blank needed a design with presence.
The Roman Imperial was the natural choice. Its classical detailing demands a timber with strength and drama.
As I turned it, the grain opened beautifully — tight burl eyes emerging, dark pockets deepening, the smoky undertones becoming more pronounced with each pass. There’s always a moment during polishing when you discover whether the depth will truly come alive. With this one, it absolutely did.
The “Smoke” isn’t an effect — it’s the wood’s own character, revealed layer by layer.
