Saorsa – The Freedom Collection

What makes this pen special?

Saorsa — meaning freedom in Scottish Gaelic — is a fountain pen for someone who doesn't particularly care for ordinary.

The body is made from a resin blank cast by me, by hand, combining rich teal, flashes of gold and subtle lighter tones. The result isn't manufactured to a template, and it isn't intended to look exactly like another pen. Every casting develops its own pattern, movement and character.

That makes Saorsa genuinely individual.

The Celtic-inspired knotwork detailing complements the hand-cast material beautifully, giving the pen an unmistakable Gaelic character without making it feel like a reproduction of something that already exists.

And then there's the cap.

Rather than relying on a conventional screw thread, this fountain pen uses a magnetic cap, giving it a wonderfully smooth and satisfying closing action. It simply finds its place and clicks into position.

It's a little bit unconventional.

Which, frankly, is rather the point.

Who is this pen for?

Saorsa is for someone who appreciates craftsmanship, individuality and things that haven't been produced by the thousand.

It's particularly suited to someone with an interest in Celtic or Gaelic culture, but you don't have to own a kilt, live in the Highlands or know your ceilidh from your cèilidh to appreciate it.

It's simply a beautiful fountain pen with a story behind it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the exact pen I will receive?

Yes. This is a handmade pen rather than a mass-produced product. The pen shown is the actual pen you will receive.

The resin blank was cast by me, and its pattern developed during the casting process. I don't try to make every blank identical — quite the opposite. The small variations, swirls, flashes and imperfections of the pattern are part of what makes handmade resin so interesting.

Why does the resin look different from other pens?

Because it isn't a standardised commercial blank.

I cast my own blanks specifically so I can experiment with colours, movement and combinations that aren't necessarily available as ready-made pen blanks. Each casting develops its own character.

Does the fountain pen have a magnetic cap?

Yes. Saorsa uses a magnetic cap rather than a conventional screw cap. It gives the pen a particularly smooth and satisfying feel when closing and opening it.

Is this suitable as a gift?

Absolutely. Particularly for someone who appreciates Celtic design, handmade craftsmanship, fountain pens, or simply owning something that nobody else has the same.

Maker's Story

I could have bought a ready-made Celtic pen blank.

I didn't.

I wanted to make something that looked like it belonged together — the colour, the Celtic detailing and the shape — while still having something of my own personality in it.

So I cast the resin myself.

That means I don't know exactly how every swirl will appear when I turn the blank on the lathe. Sometimes the gold appears prominently. Sometimes it disappears almost completely. Sometimes the resin does something I wasn't expecting.

That's part of the fun.

I don't make identical pens. I make individual ones.

Saorsa is my interpretation of Celtic-inspired design: handmade, slightly unconventional and deliberately unwilling to conform.

Not standardised. Not mass-produced. Not quite the same as anything else.

Saorsa. Freedom, in something you can hold.

Saorsa Rollerball

What makes this pen special?

The Saorsa Rollerball shares the same hand-cast resin as its fountain pen companion, but has a character all of its own.

The rich teal resin is threaded with flashes of gold and lighter tones, creating a pattern that moves along the barrel. Because the blank was cast by me rather than bought as a finished commercial blank, the pattern is completely individual.

The Celtic-inspired knotwork fittings provide the perfect contrast to the colourful resin, while the substantial rollerball design gives the pen a reassuring presence in the hand.

This isn't a pen designed to disappear into a desk drawer.

It's designed to be picked up.

Who is this pen for?

For someone who loves the look and feel of a fountain pen but prefers the simplicity and convenience of a rollerball.

It's also an ideal choice for someone who wants a handmade pen with Celtic character without necessarily wanting to use a fountain pen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the exact pen I will receive?

Yes. The pen shown is the actual pen you will receive.

The resin pattern is unique to this particular casting and cannot be precisely reproduced.

Is the resin commercially produced?

No. The blank used for this pen was cast by me in my own workshop.

That's important because the appearance isn't simply selected from a catalogue. I create the combination, cast the material and then turn the blank to reveal what is hidden inside.

Will another Saorsa pen look exactly like this one?

No — and that's deliberate.

Even if I cast another blank using the same colours and materials, the internal pattern will develop differently.

Is this suitable as a gift?

Yes. Saorsa makes a particularly distinctive gift for someone interested in Celtic design, handmade objects, writing or simply owning something genuinely individual.

Maker's Story

There's a phrase I rather like:

"Why be ordinary?"

That's probably the best way of explaining this pen.

I wanted the Celtic detailing, but I didn't want to simply put Celtic fittings onto a standard resin blank. So I made my own material to go with them.

The result is deliberately imperfect in the best possible way.

The gold doesn't form a perfect pattern. The colours don't repeat. The resin doesn't behave itself.

And that's exactly why I like it.

Not conformist. Not standardised. Not mass-produced.

Just a piece of material I created, turned on my lathe and finished into a pen that didn't exist before I made it.

That's what handmade means to me.
