What makes this pen special
There’s a quiet depth to this piece that only reveals itself slowly. The curly black maple shifts under the light like dark water at midnight, with rippling grain patterns flowing through the timber in subtle waves. Imported from Indonesia and stabilised by hand in my workshop, this wood has been carefully preserved while still retaining its natural character and warmth.
Unlike highly polished finishes, this pen has been intentionally left unsealed. The result is a wonderfully tactile feel in the hand — warm, organic, and reassuringly real. You don’t just hold this pen; you feel the grain beneath your fingers every time you write.
The Sovereign shape suits the material perfectly, giving the pen a balanced, confident presence without becoming oversized or flashy. It’s understated luxury — the kind that rewards closer attention.
No two pieces of curly maple ever behave quite the same way, which makes this pen entirely unique.
Who this pen is for
This pen is for someone who appreciates natural materials and understated craftsmanship over high-gloss perfection. It suits writers, journal keepers, collectors, and anyone who enjoys objects with genuine character and texture.
If you prefer warmth and authenticity over something that feels mass-produced, Midnight Current will feel immediately at home in your hand.
Why choose a fountain pen?
A fountain pen transforms writing from a task into an experience. The ink flows with minimal pressure, allowing the nib to glide smoothly across the page while reducing hand fatigue during longer writing sessions.
Many fountain pen users also find their handwriting becomes more expressive and personal over time. Combined with the tactile feel of natural wood, the experience becomes calming, deliberate, and deeply satisfying.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why has the pen been left unsealed?
Leaving the wood unsealed allows you to feel the natural texture and warmth of the timber rather than a synthetic coating. It creates a far more organic writing experience.
Will the wood mark or age over time?
Yes — gently and beautifully. Like a favourite leather wallet or wooden tool handle, the pen will develop its own character through use.
What does stabilised wood mean?
Stabilising involves infusing the wood with resin under pressure, strengthening the timber while helping preserve its beauty and durability.
Is this pen unique?
Absolutely. The grain pattern in curly maple is entirely natural, meaning no two pens will ever look the same.
Maker’s Story
Some materials demand a glossy finish to show themselves off. This wasn’t one of them.
The moment I handled this piece of curly black maple after stabilising it, I knew covering it beneath layers of lacquer would lose something important. The timber already had presence — dark, flowing, tactile, and quietly dramatic.
By leaving the surface natural, the pen becomes far more personal. You feel every subtle ripple in the grain while writing, creating a connection with the material that polished finishes often hide.
It’s a pen designed not just to be admired, but to be experienced.
