What makes this pen special?
Some things are designed to look new. Others look as though they already have a story to tell.
The Heritage fountain pen belongs firmly in the second category.
Made with beautifully figured Amboyna burl and complemented by antique-brass-tone fittings, this pen has the character of a treasured writing instrument from another era. Its warm golden-brown tones, intricate swirling grain and darker natural markings create a wonderfully organic pattern that draws the eye without needing bright colours or excessive decoration.
Amboyna burl is prized for its extraordinary figuring. Rather than displaying the straight grain you might expect from ordinary timber, burl can reveal intricate curls, eyes and swirling patterns that make each piece distinctive. The wood does much of the talking here, with the aged-brass appearance of the fittings providing the perfect companion.
The decorative bands, sculpted end pieces and distinctive screw-like details give the pen an industrial, almost steampunk character. It's a combination of natural beauty and mechanical styling that feels both traditional and unusual.
The result is a fountain pen with warmth, individuality and a sense of permanence. It wouldn't look out of place beside a leather-bound journal, on an antique writing desk or in the hands of someone who appreciates the pleasure of putting pen to paper.
And the best part? The wood has already done the hard work of being beautiful. My job was simply to reveal it and turn it into something worth keeping.
Who is this pen for?
The Heritage is for someone who appreciates traditional craftsmanship, natural materials and objects with a little history in their appearance.
Perhaps you're a fountain pen collector who prefers warm woods and understated elegance to bright colours and shiny modern finishes. Perhaps you're a lover of antiques, vintage writing instruments or the satisfying feel of a beautifully made object.
It would make a thoughtful gift for a writer, journal keeper, history enthusiast or anyone who appreciates the natural character of wood.
It would also suit someone looking for a special pen for signing important documents, recording thoughts or simply making everyday writing feel a little less ordinary.
This isn't a pen that needs to shout for attention. Its appeal lies in the details: the intricate burl grain, the warm tones and the aged-metal styling.
In a world where so much is mass-produced, the Heritage offers something different: a writing instrument with its own individual character.

Is this suitable as a gift?
Absolutely. The Heritage makes a thoughtful gift for a fountain pen enthusiast, collector, writer or anyone who appreciates natural wood and traditional styling.
Its warm tones and vintage-inspired fittings give it a timeless appearance, making it a lovely choice for a birthday, retirement, anniversary, graduation or other special occasion.
Because the wood has its own individual grain and character, you're giving someone a genuinely distinctive writing instrument rather than another item from a production line.
Maker's Story
I've always liked materials that have a story of their own, and few things demonstrate that quite as well as a good piece of burl.
Amboyna burl has a wonderful habit of making you stop and look. The grain twists and curls in unexpected directions, creating patterns that seem almost too intricate to be natural. One moment you see a swirl, the next a little eye or a darker marking that gives the wood an entirely different character.
You can spend a long time looking at it. Ask me how I know.
For the Heritage, I wanted the wood to be the star of the show. The antique-brass-tone fittings seemed the natural choice, adding an old-world character that complements the warm colours and intricate figuring rather than competing with them.
I particularly like the way the traditional styling and mechanical-looking details work together.
There's something about this pen that makes you imagine a leather-bound notebook, a substantial writing desk and someone taking the time to write a proper letter rather than sending a three-word message.
Of course, I make pens, not time machines, so I can't promise to transport you back to the Victorian era. You'll have to supply your own waistcoat.
What I can offer is a handmade fountain pen that celebrates the beauty of natural wood and the pleasure of creating something individual.
The Heritage is understated, distinctive and full of character. It's a reminder that sometimes the most beautiful designs don't need to be complicated. They simply need the right materials, the right details and a maker who knows when to let the wood speak for itself.
And this piece of Amboyna burl has plenty to say.
