Warm as autumn light and rich with heritage, Hydref Cymru captures the deep, layered beauty of a Welsh woodland in October. Swirls of amber, chestnut, forest green and soft cream drift through the resin like fallen leaves carried on a gentle breeze.
Crafted from a rare Conway Stewart blank, the material carries that unmistakable depth and character for which the historic British maker was known. Paired with ornate gold detailing and a delicately balanced Princess profile, the result is a pen that feels regal yet natural — refined without being ostentatious.
The gold trim glows against the marbled body like late afternoon sun breaking through trees. It is a pen that invites slow writing, thoughtful letters, and moments of reflection.
This is not just a fountain pen. It is autumn in the hand.
Maker’s Story
Conway Stewart blanks are no longer easily found. When they do surface, they are treasured — and approached with a mixture of excitement and apprehension.
This particular blank had been set aside for the right commission. When I chose it for Sarah’s Princess pen, I knew there was no margin for error. A rare blank cannot be replaced. One slip on the lathe, one misjudged cut, and it would be gone forever.
Working it required patience. Slow passes. Careful measurements. A constant awareness that every shaving removed was irreversible. The material has depth, but it also demands respect. Too aggressive, and the pattern loses its balance. Too hesitant, and the proportions suffer.
There’s a quiet pressure that comes with turning something rare — not fear exactly, but responsibility. Responsibility to the material, to the heritage it represents, and to the person it is being made for.
When the final polish revealed the full depth of the colours — the amber glowing, the greens deepening, the gold trim coming alive — there was relief, and then satisfaction.
Hydref Cymru was worth the risk.
